Henry B. Poor, Gamma ’39 (Amherst)
At the celebration of Psi U’s sesquicentennial anniversary 25 years ago, Alexander Turner, from the Theta chapter’s class of 1934, greeted those in attendance with a story he heard at the centennial anniversary in 1933.
Brother Turner recalled that Earl Babst, one of Psi U’s most distinguished alumni, talked of a prior Convention held in 1896 when he escorted Samuel Goodale, a founder of Psi Upsilon, to a meeting with Elisha Taylor and Clement Davidson, who were among the first initiates after our founding.
“To see them together,” Babst said “was living proof of the pride we have in our founders.”
At the Sesquicentennial Convention I heard Brother Turner extend the warm regards of founder Samuel Goodale as he had received them from Earl Babst.
Therefore today, on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of Psi Upsilon’s founding, I extend the warm regards of founder Samuel Goodale, first passed on by Earl Babst to Alexander Turner and now by Henry Poor, to all living Psi U’s. And I ask that 25 years from now, when we celebrate Psi Upsilon’s bicentennial that you pass along these same warm greetings to future generations of our brothers.

There is a strange magic in those simple letters “Ψ Υ” which has inspired the poet’s heart, and has bound in close fraternal friendship, thousands of hearts and lives, young and old.

It is valuable in its influence, and brilliant in its record. . . . As in the past and present, so doubtless it will be in the future.

Benjamin K. Phelps, Beta 1853 (Yale)
You younger brothers cannot realize how fondly our older eyes dwell upon your faces, whose eager brightness recalls to us the days when youth was hope, and hope was strength. . . . Even in the consciousness of our own defeat, we exult in the possibility of your triumphs. We welcome you to the places we have filled, in the glad consciousness that you can fill them better.

Alexander H. Rice, Theta 1844 (Union)
I remember well how I felt when I entered college, and saw scarcely a familiar face, and then walked through the college halls, and met none but strangers. I wondered how I should ever get on, whether I should ever find a hand that would clasp mine, and a heart that would respond sympathetically to mine, such as I had been accustomed to find in my early days. I found no such thing until I joined the Psi Upsilon Fraternity in Union College and then I found it as completely and as fully as ever I found it anywhere else.
