My 40 Years as a Psi U

Richard A. Rasmussen, Upsilon ‘72

In the course of working on plans for the Upsilon’s 150th anniversary celebration with our Alumni Board, members of the undergraduate chapter, other alumni, and the university alumni staff, I had the opportunity to reflect from a variety of perspectives on my 40 years involvement with Psi U beginning as a pledge in the fall of 1968. Immediately Accepted

John H. Logie, Delta Delta-Phi ‘61

I grew up in Grand Rapids MI, graduating with just over 100 Seniors in a small suburb, in 1957.  At that time, the University of Michigan looked awfully big to me.  I was accepted at Williams College, Williamstown MA and joined 265 other young men in the freshman class, studying pre-med.  It was quickly obvious that the social life of the college was centered in the fraternities.  For a school of 1000 men, the fraternity houses were majestic.  I pledged the Delta Delta chapter with more than 20 others and was President of my pledge class.  In my second year, it developed that I couldn’t get all the necessary pre-med required courses in less than 4 years.  However, I also found out that I could qualify for the med school at Michigan at the end of three, if I transferred before my 3rd year. Treated Like A Brother

Stuart Goldenberg Delta ‘81 (NYU)

NYU is a school in the middle of a great city, so you really do not need a fraternity for social activities. Why I joined in 1977 I can tell you in one word, woman, why I stayed will take a bit more.

In 1977, Psi U at NYU was the largest fraternity in size and it had the largest sisterhood. More importantly to me, included in its sisterhood was a girl named Jane, who I thought was beauty personified. Not only that but at all the parties, she talked to me and treated me nicely, I was amazed. Add to that the guys were so friendly and you can see why I wanted to join. Glenn Ryder, Tom Cahill, Dave Harold, and Eric Simons, were all guys that treated me, well like a brother, before I became one. Continue reading »

An Unusual Reunion

Dennis Dix, Beta Beta ‘66 (Trinity)

On March 23, 2007, the Beta Beta held a very unusual and completely unsanctioned reunion in Lyme, New Hampshire at the home of Phyllis Orem, wife of Nicholas Orem,  (’68). Several women, married to and/or related to Psi U brothers from the Beta Beta classes of 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969, gathered to celebrate over 40 years of continuing friendship and “sisterhood”.

Dubbed “the Psi U Sisters” (for reasons obvious as you will see), the interconnections between these women may be hard to comprehend. Try to keep up. Continue reading »

A sense of brotherhood

Daniel Kuhn, Delta Nu ‘11 (Keene State College)

I had joined Delta Nu Psi when I was a freshman. It was a local fraternity here in Keene that was full of a comradely rich brotherhood and a joi de vivre that would rival those of the ancient Greeks.

I knew nothing about national organizations and what they were about, so I assumed that fraternities were a strictly regional thing. It wasn’t until we were told Psi U was looking at us that I realized that all these feelings didn’t seem so…esoteric anymore. We started pledging Psi U shortly thereafter, and started learning more and more about them and the close ties they emphasize with other chapters.

There’s something about Psi Upsilon as a national that gives me the feeling that no matter where I am, I can have that sense of brotherhood with any other chapter, and it’s a nice feeling to know that I’m welcome in more than just one college.
